- Install new batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors (important to do monthly testing)
- Dust and test all detectors
- Check fire extinguishers (at least once a month)
- Check and reset ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)
- Schedule chimney and flue inspection and cleaning
- Schedule fireplace inspection
- Schedule an electrical inspection (if electrical hasn’t been inspected in over 5 years)
- Clean or replace furnace filter and heat recovery ventilator (HRV)
- Schedule furnace inspection
- Cover or wrap air conditioner
- Have humidifier and HRV (heat recovery unit) serviced
- Drain sediment from water heater
- Check septic system
- Check and clean clothes dryer vent
- Insulate exposed pipes or pipes that pass through a cold zone or along an exterior wall
- Inspect floor drains to ensure trap is filled with water
- Clean kitchen exhaust hood and filter
- Test and clean kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans
- Vacuum refrigerator coils
- Check exterior finishes and cladding for damage
- Check exterior caulking around windows, doors, venting and openings for air and water leaks – re: caulk, if needed
- Remove screens and install storm windows
- Install weather stripping around doors
- Drain exterior water lines
- Turn off outdoor water supply and store hoses
- Inspect deck and schedule necessary repairs
- Cover and store outdoor furniture
- Check garage door tracks and lubricate bearings – if you have any concerns call in a pro.
- Winterize landscaping and remove leaves
- Inspect roof for damage including shingles, flashing and venting – schedule re-roofing/repair if necessary
- Check attic for condensation and humidity
- Make sure insulation does not block soffits or venting
- Add extra insulation (minimum of 12-15” blown-in insulation
- Make sure vapour barrier is properly sealed
- Check and clean eavestroughs/gutters
