- Install new batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors (important to do monthly testing and hardwired smoke alarms must have a battery backup; this battery must also be replaced)
- Dust and test all detectors
- Check fire extinguishers (at least once a month)
- Check and reset ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)
- Schedule a radon test
- Clean or replace furnace filter and heat recovery ventilator (HRV)
- Check furnace fan belt
- Check air ducts
- Clean humidifier
- Check water heater
- Check and clean clothes dryer vent
- Test sump pump
- Schedule a maintenance and/or energy efficiency inspection that includes thermography/thermal imaging (temperature differences between indoor and outdoor environments during winter help find leaks and hidden moisture issues)
- Clean kitchen exhaust hood and filter
- Vacuum refrigerator coils
- Check sinks and toilets for leaks
- Inspect hoses on washing machines, dishwashers and ice-makers for leaks
- Change direction of ceiling fan (clockwise for winter)
- Check exterior finishes and cladding for damage
- Shovel snow away from your foundation, as well as pathways, walkways, sidewalks and driveways
- Apply a generous amount of deicer along pathways, walkways, sidewalks and driveways before a storm
- Check for excessive snow on roof
- Monitor for ice damming and icicles
- Remove snow and ice from roof overhang/vents by a professional roofer
- Check attic for signs of moisture, such as water stains, mould or frost build up on the underside of sheathing
